SECURITY PRECAUTIONS FOR THE BU POLYMER CENTER
Thiefs prey on those who fail to follow simple security precautions.
If you're not careful you could lose anything from your wallet (which
has happened several times) to all our hard disks (which happened here
on campus last summer and would put us all out of business).
With a little effort, we can avoid these unfortunate circumstances.
We have in place a fairly sophisticated alarm system in both our labs.
Unfortunately, the alarms are only as good as those who are operating
them. So, we ask each of you to familiarize yourselves with these
procedures. If anything here is unclear, please see Paul Trunfio (SCI
200A, x9041, trunfio@miranda) for assistance.
Some basic precuations:
- Make sure that you lock your office door and labs whenever
you are the last person leaving.
- Never leave your wallet or keys sitting on a table. We have had
several wallets stolen in the past few years and in every case the
person left it sitting somewhere.
-
Never let someone into our labs who do not know or who does not have a key.
If they are indeed Polymer Center staff, then they should have keys to
the labs.
- Always report any suspicious activity to the BU Police
(353-2121). Remember it is better to be safe than sorry. When in
doubt, call the police!
- You are required to be familiar with the procedures below for
arming and disarming the alarms in Rooms 101 and 202. If you are not,
then you cannot enter the labs because you increase the chances of a
theft!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING ROOM 101
ENTERING 101.
- If necessary, you will have to unlock the upper deadbolt (it's the
same key that we have on all Polymer Center offices (VW88) for which
only faculty/staff and graduate students have the key).
- Enter the code to the pushbutton lock. If you do not have the
code, then see Bob Tomposki (Room 204B).
- If the alarm warning sounds, you must enter the alarm code
followed by the ENT key to turn off the alarm.
LEAVING 101.
If you are the last senior staff person to leave the room at night
(i.e., faculty/staff, postdoc, or graduate student), then you must:
- Make sure all undergraduates leave the lab. Do not let anyone
tell you they have the right to stay, because they do not. This is your
responsibility.
- Arm the alarm by entering the 4 digit code followed by the
ENT key. The blinking yellow/green lights should go on. The
alarm is now armed. Note: you must make sure the door is closed when
setting the alarm (otherwise the alarm will not arm).
- Set the upper deadbolt lock (using the VW88 key).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING ROOM 202
ENTERING 202.
- If the RED light is on the alarm, then you must disarm it.
Simply enter the 4 digit code and the GREEN light should come on.
- The VW88 key will unlock the door. Note: this is the same key
which unlocks the glass door to the Polymer Center.
LEAVING 202.
- If you are the last person leaving at night, you must lock the
door and arm the alarm by entering 9. The RED light
should go on. The alarm is now armed.
